Information & History on Kilims, Rugs and Knitting Art
Weaving and knitting Kilims & Rugs Kilim Knitting is a historical art and an traditional ancient way for Azerbaijani people (especially Ardebil) for making money. Turkish Kilims and Rugs have a great historical story in Iran and in ancient Iranian Tribes and villages like Shah Savan, Ghashghaee, Fars, Moghan, Kerman, Kurds etc.
Ardebil Kilim: There was an old famous mosque in Ardebil’s Musalla (a place where Muslims pray together and socially) where Shah Esmaeel, the leaser of Safavi Dynasty was buried. This mosque is known as the source of first Ardebil kilims for Europeans, since Vincent Robinson a European merchant brought a Kilim from to his country.
Sirjan Kilim: Sirjan is the origin of the best quality silk and wool woven Kilims in the world. Sirjan Kilims are best examples for Persian Kilims and Rugs. With this in mind, Sirjan Kilims are much more expensive to buy than other originations. All Sirjan Kilims can be washed with walnut and Tea to give them a more spiritual look.
Knitting (Weaving): Kilims are different regarding their knitting and weaving methods from carpets. Persian Carpets are knitted on the frames called Daar, but Kilims are knitted on the ground and without any frame. This is the reason why Kilims may have some problems in their accuracy regarding the design and the around margins. But this make them look completely natural and more alive than carpets. Also Carpets knitted from exact designs with scales but Kilims are knitted more sensual.
Sizes: Carpets can be in very large sizes but Kilims are mostly knitted and woven in beneath sizes: 70 x 100 cm100 x 150 cm200 x 300 cm250 x 350 cm300 x 400 cm The 100 x 150 cm (which is called Zar o Nim means 1.5 square meter) is the most common size for Kilims. They are some other sizes for Kilims which are not standard and are due to different sizes of knitters’ tents and houses, who knit the Kilims to cover the floor. Kilims’ Colors: All Kilim knitters use Herbal colors to give the Kilims a more static and live look. The technique to get the herbal colors from wood, walnut, tea, grass and flowers, has thousands of years history which they have been learnt from their ancestors. Kilims can be washed by walnut shell and/or tea to give them a more spiritual and live look. Walnut washed Kilims look more ancient and older. HOT & NEW! |
